Aims and history

The association aimed to develop knowledge of the Médoc as a whole, contribute to the preservation of its heritage and cultural life, and explore its economic reality.

Areas of work

Its fields included archaeology, history, geography, nature and the environment, art, culture and the economy. The association worked simultaneously to deepen this knowledge and to make it available to the general public and to schoolchildren.

Foundation and namesake

“Baurein pour la Connaissance du Médoc” was founded in Cissac on 5 December 1984 by local people wishing to share their interest in the Médoc. Its name honoured Abbé Baurein, a former priest of Cissac, scholar and historian. His “Les Variétés Bordelaises” remains an important reference on the Gironde before 1789.
